Abstract

A Syllabus Model Development in Teaching English for Specific Purposes is a comprehensive and theoretically rigorous academic text that addresses one of the most complex challenges in applied linguistics: the principled design of ESP syllabuses. Spanning seven chapters, the book covers an impressive range of interconnected topics — from the historical foundations of ESP and needs analysis frameworks to syllabus typology, curriculum theory, genre-based pedagogy, materials development, and integrated skills instruction. Drawing on landmark scholarship from Hutchinson and Waters, Dudley-Evans and St John, Swales, Hyland, and many others, the authors construct a coherent intellectual framework that consistently bridges theory and practice. The writing is dense but accessible, marked by an evident command of the field and a commendable effort to synthesize decades of ESP scholarship into a single, structured volume. The book’s integrative approach — refusing to present genre-based, task-based, or corpus-based methods as competing alternatives — is one of its most intellectually distinctive features.

That said, a few areas invite further development. The earlier chapters, while theoretically rich, occasionally veer into extended descriptive surveys that could be more efficiently condensed to make room for the practical application sections, which feel comparatively brief relative to the conceptual groundwork laid. Some passages across chapters also share noticeable structural similarities in their prose rhythm and paragraph organization, suggesting that certain sections may benefit from more differentiated authorial voice and tighter editorial revision. Additionally, while the book acknowledges the importance of non-Western and non-Anglophone educational contexts — including references to Indonesian settings — deeper engagement with localized ESP practices and case studies from the Global South would strengthen its claim to cross-cultural relevance. These are modest critiques of what is otherwise a well-organized, intellectually serious contribution to ESP scholarship, well-suited for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners seeking a rigorous grounding in syllabus model development.
